Skaros Rock

Skaros was once the most important fortified settlement on Santorini — a Venetian fortress built in the 13th century that served as the island's capital until earthquakes and Ottoman attacks led to its gradual abandonment. Today only ruins remain, but the dramatic rocky promontory above Imerovigli village still offers some of the island's finest caldera views — and because it requires a 30-minute hike to reach, it's almost always quiet.
The path descends from Imerovigli village along the caldera edge before climbing the rocky promontory to the ruins at the tip. The views encompass the full caldera, the volcano island (Nea Kameni), Oia to the north and the pumice cliffs of Therasia. Wear proper shoes and bring water — the path is uneven and there is no shade. Sunset from Skaros is equally beautiful to Oia's and far less crowded.
